COLLAGEN IS KEY
HOW MUCH COLLAGEN HAVE YOU LOST?
No Data Found
Collagen is the main structural protein in the body. It supports skin structure and shape and keeps the skin smooth and hydrated. We lose about 1% of collagen per year, after the age of 20. Sculptra (PLLA) works as a biostimulator to replace lost collagen. Treatment results appear gradually and last up to 2 years.
Young Skin
Skin is composed of 70-80% collagen and elastin, which provides strong mechanical support for healthy tissue.
Old Skin
As we age, collagen synthesis slowly declines. The collagen meshwork becomes less robust. Skin becomes thinner and less supported.

Sculptra FAQs
Sculptra is an injectable filler that stimulates natural collagen production using Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA)
Sculptra restores lost volume in the midface, cheeks, nasolbial folds, and temporal hollows. It corrects facial wrinkles and improves skin texture and tone.
Sculptra has been on the market for more than 20 years. It was first approved by the FDA in 2004 for the treatment of temporal fat loss in patients with HIV. Since then, Sculptra has gained popularity as a cosmetic filler for the correction of facial volume loss and wrinkles.
Most people are familiar with traditional dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane which use hyaluronic gel to add volume to the face and smooth out lines and wrinkles.
Sculptra is also a type of dermal filler, but it works by stimunlating collagen production using Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA), a natural substance in the human body. Sculptra stimulates collagen production over time, gradually improving volume-loss and wrinkles.
Hyaluronic gel and PLLA fillers both work well to provide natural, long-lasting results. There are differences between the two:
- Sculptra lasts up to two years, while hyalurnoic gel fillers tend to last for 6-12 months.
- Sculptra is a gradual treatment that requires multiple sessions to achiieve best results. Hyaluronic gel fillers may only require a single session.
- Sculptra costs more per treatment session (but gives longer-lasting results).
- Make sure your Treatment Deposit is submitted prior to your visit.
- Allow about 45-60 minutes for your first visit.
- Arrive a few minutes early to complete our intake questionnaire.
- Let us know if you have a history of easy bruising or are on anticoagulation.
- Let us know if you have a history of easy infections or oral HSV.
- You may NOT be pregnant or nursing (sorry!)
Sculptra is used to restore volume loss and to improve facial folds and wrinkles. Typical candidates for treatment are in their 30's, 40's, 50's, or beyond. Both women and men are good candidates for Sculptra treatment.
Your Sculptra treatment will be performed by one of our board certified injectors. Our medical providers are highly trained with expert knowledge of facial anatomy and proper injection techniques. See our list of providers here.
We know that receiving an injectable treatment is a big deal and it can be a bit nerve-racking! Here's what to expect during your visit:
- Review of your goals and concerns
- Dedicated facial analysis
- Description of all treatment options
- Description of treatment technique
- Discussion of risks
- Review of aftercare instructions
- Pre-treatment numbing injection
- Before & After photos
You may experience mild redness, soreness, or bruising in the treatment area, typically resolving in a few days to one week. Mild swelling may also occur.
Our team will reach out to you one week after treatment to make sure recovery is going well.
Treatment results will become apparent over the following weeks and months. Subsequent treatment sessions are spaced 4 weeks apart. Most patients need 2-3 treatment sessions for full effect.
Note: Post-treatment massage of the area is NOT needed if a standard 9 mL reconstitution method has been used.
Correction of moderate to severe facial volume loss typically requires at least 2 vials of Sculptra PER treatment session. Most patients need 3 treatment sessions to achieve the desired result. For Sculptra pricing at our clinic, learn more here.
Most patients need at least 3 treatment sessions to achieve the desired result. Treatment sessions are spaced 4 weeks apart. Some patients may require fewer or more sessions, depending on the treatment goals.
Sculptra is generally safe and well-tolerated, however, adverse events can occur.
Occasionally, Sculptra results in delayed occurrence of small papules or nodules in the treated area. These may develop 3-6 months after treatment. Papules are usually not visible, pose no risk, and usually resolve spontaneously on their own.
Rare but serious adverse events include possible occlusion of blood vessels, ischemia, infarction, or infection.
Sculptra is generally safe and well-tolerated, however, contraindications exist. Sculptra should NOT be used in the following instances:
- History of keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring
- History of allergy to lidocaine
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Immunocompromised state
- Active malignancy
A full course of Sculptra typically lasts 2 years, or longer. Results may vary based on age, degree of volume loss, metabolism, smoking, sun exposure, injector technique, and amount of product used.
We recommend following up at 6-month intervals to evaluate your progress. Best results are observed with annual re-treatment.
At this time, Sculptra is only FDA approved for use in the face. However, common off-label use of Sculptra includes butt injections, often referred to as a "nonsurgical butt lift." This may be a desirable option for patients seeking a rounder, more full posterior without undergoing surgery.
Yes, BH+ Membership Plan gets you savings on every Sculptra treatment you purchase. Learn more about BH+ here.
