While SkinPen® microneedling is safe and effective for most skin types, there are situations where treatment should be delayed or avoided:

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding

• You have active skin infections, open wounds, or inflammatory acne in the treatment area

• You have a history of keloid scarring or poor wound healing

• You are using Accutane (isotretinoin) or have taken it within the past 6–12 months

• You are currently using strong topical actives (Tretinoin, Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, Vitamin C) — these should be paused before treatment

• You are on blood-thinning or photo-sensitizing medications (e.g., anticoagulants, doxycycline, tetracycline)

• You have uncontrolled diabetes, skin cancer, or certain autoimmune conditions (like lupus or psoriasis)

Most clients describe it as a mild, prickly vibration—very tolerable, especially with numbing cream. The sensation is brief and typically feels more like light scratching than pain. Skin may feel warm and pink afterward, similar to a mild sunburn, but this usually resolves within 24–48 hours.

Most clients notice improvement after just one session, but for best results we typically recommend a series of 3–6 SkinPen® treatments, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. This schedule allows your skin time to heal and regenerate, producing visible gains in texture, tone, fine lines, pore size, and scars.

SkinPen® microneedling is FDA-cleared and considered safe when performed by a trained provider. Some temporary side effects are possible.

Most are mild and short-lived, such as:

• Redness (similar to a light sunburn) lasting 1–3 days

• Dryness, flaking, or mild peeling

• Swelling or tightness in the treated area

• Sensitivity when applying skincare or sunscreen

Less common effects may include:

• Temporary breakouts as skin purges

• Hyperpigmentation or prolonged healing (rare, often linked to sun exposure or not following aftercare)

• Infection (extremely rare when aftercare guidelines are followed)

Following proper pre- and post-care instructions is the best way to minimize risks and achieve smooth, glowing results.

Out of caution, SkinPen® microneedling is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. While the procedure is non-invasive and does not use chemicals or heat, it has not been extensively studied in pregnant or lactating individuals.

Additionally, hormonal changes during pregnancy can make skin more sensitive or reactive, which increases the risk of irritation or pigmentation. For your safety, we recommend waiting until after pregnancy and breastfeeding to begin your SkinPen treatments. Our team will be happy to schedule you when the time is right.
